La première journée de la nouvelle année musulmane est une commémoration de l’Hégire, un évènement historique qui se produisit en l’année 622. L’Hégire (la « rupture » ou l »exil ») désigne le moment où le prophète Mahomet, avec quelques compagnons, a quitté la Mecque pour se rendre à Médine et y fonder une communauté répondant à ses souhaits, c’est à dire soudée autour des mêmes croyances. Cette communauté s’appelle Oumma. C’est en cela que l’Hégire désigne autant la rupture que l’exil : rupture avec un modèle de société, et départ vers un lieu prêt à accueillir une communauté qui s’étendra par la suite dans toute la péninsule arabique, puis dans la majorité des régions du monde.
